$399.99
Clearly designed for office use, the HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Printer ($399.99) is one of the more elite inkjet multifunction printers (MFPs) available. It offers a level of speed, paper handling, and features that are more often found in color laser MFPs than in inkjets. And much like most color laser MFPs, it's big enough that you won't want it sitting on your desk. Assuming you can find room for it, however, it's an excellent choice for a micro office or a small office or workgroup.
There aren't many inkjets in the same class as the 8740. One of the few that qualifies is the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-5690, which our Editors' Choice inkjet MFP for up to heavy-duty use in a small office. Between the two, the Epson model was significantly faster on our tests and printed higher-quality text output—two key features that help keep it firmly in place as our top pick. However, the 8740 turned in higher-quality graphics output on our tests. It also offers a higher paper capacity for a similarly priced configuration. The Epson WF-5690 comes with a 250-sheet front drawer, an 80-sheet rear tray, and duplexer standard. The 8740, in contrast, comes with two 250-sheet drawers and a duplexer standard for the same price. On the other hand, the Epson printer offers a second 250-sheet tray as an option, giving it a slightly higher maximum capacity if you add the optional extra tray. The Basics and More If you connect the printer to a network, using either Ethernet or Wi-Fi, you can print to it through the cloud or connect to it through an access point on the network to print from or scan to iOS and Android phones and tablets. Download film sokola rimba full movie. You can also use the front-panel touch screen to take advantage of HP Print Apps to print from various cloud sites. If you choose to connect to a single PC via USB cable instead, you won't be able to print through the cloud or use the Print Apps. However, the printer's Wi-Fi Direct will still let you connect directly from mobile devices to print and scan. If your phone or tablet offers NFC, you can also establish the Wi-Fi Direct connection simply by tapping the device to the NFC logo on the MFP's control panel. For scanning, the 8740 offers better paper handling than most small-office MFPs, with a legal-size, rather than letter-size, flatbed, along with a 50-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) for up to legal-size paper. Even better, the 8740 offers true duplex scanning, rather than limiting you to simplex scanning, or even a duplexing ADF, which takes the slower approach of scanning one side, turning the page over, and scanning the second side. Like most MFPs that can both scan and print in duplex, the 8740 lets you copy both simplex and duplex originals to your choice of simplex or duplex copies. Setup, Speed, and Output Quality On our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software), the 8740 came in at 6.3 pages per minute (ppm). That actually makes it faster than most color laser MFPs in the same price range. I timed the Brother MFC-9340CDW at 5.8ppm on our tests, and the Canon Color imageClass MF628Cw at only 4.4ppm. However, the Epson WF-5690 was significantly faster than any of these other printers, at 10.1ppm, which puts the 8740's speed in the range of respectable, rather than impressive. See How We Test Printers Output quality is a bit of a mixed bag, but more of a plus than a minus overall. Text quality is at the high end of the range that includes the vast majority of inkjets, with highly readable text even at 5 and 6 points for most of our test fonts. As long as you don't need even smaller fonts, you shouldn't have any complaints. Unlike laser output, however, the ink can smudge just a bit if it gets wet, which makes the text harder to read. Graphics output on our tests was a solid step above the quality most inkjets offer. I saw some subtle banding in some solid fills. However, the quality was still good enough that I wouldn't hesitate to offer the output to an important client I was trying to impress with my professionalism. If you're enough of a perfectionist for such a minor flaw to bother you, you can switch to a higher-quality mode, although printing will take longer. Photos in my tests were well within the range you'd expect for typical drugstore prints, which is a lot better than most lasers can manage. Conclusion HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One PrinterBottom Line: The HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Printer competes more directly with color laser multifunction printers than with typical inkjets, delivering speed and paper capacity that works well for moderate-duty use in a small office.
